Welcome to my super life…

Over the next few weeks I want to introduce you and your horse to some of the most nutritious food on the face of the plant superfoods!!

Many foods are casually referred to as “superfoods” such as blueberries and raspberries. Superfoods are a special category of foods that are found in nature which possess exceptional nutrition- the heavy weights of natural food world packing a lot of punch for their weight.

Healthy Nutrition by example Firstly I want to say that I would never give any thing to my horses that I wouldn’t eat, drink or rub on my own body. I have been using superfoods many years now all the superfoods which I will be writing about I have personally taken for periods of time and used them on my horses when required.

My first lists of superfoods are my Green super foods- which I try to incorporate at least two of these daily to my own diet.

Wheatgrass

Barley grass

Spirulina

Chlorella

Let’s start with Spirulina & Chlorella..

spirulina

Spirulina- 54% of complete and easily digestible vegetable protein

Spirulina is an attractive food source because it has remarkably high protein content that can deliver much-needed essential amino acids to the human body. However, a number of nutritionists have pointed out that Spirulina has a hard shell on it that may greatly hinder assimilation. Spirulina offers a significant source of B vitamins; it contains Vitamin B1, B2, B3, B6 and B9, as well as Vitamins C and D.

Spirulina, like chlorella, is hydroponically mass-produced in man-made, cement ponds and troughs, a far journey from their wild origins. These two types of algae are nourished by what the growers place in the water.

Uses- boost immune system, mineral rich, improves allergies, promote a healthy coat and skin, helps promote comfortable movement and flexibility, helps controls blood sugars and weight issues.

Chlorella- 50% of complete and easily digestible vegetable protein

Chlorella, a single-celled green algae, was arguably the first “superfood” of the modern era. Like Spirulina, researchers found that Chlorella has significant protein content, as high as 50%.

Chlorella offers valuable nutritional elements too, including essential amino acids, vitamins and minerals and has been known to detoxify the body of heavy metals. Chlorella also contains digestive enzymes such as pepsin, which helps to break down foods we eat. Chlorella has CGF, Chlorella Growth Factor, which is said to stimulate tissue repair and is also used as a topical treatment for damaged tissue.

Uses- boost immune system, minerals rich, when fighting disease, excellent for removing heavy metal and synthetic toxins out of the body, digestive remedy.

Look for purity when it comes to Spirulina and chlorella, especially because algae absorb nearly everything it contacts, including toxins.

Here are a few questions to ask the manufacturer when selecting a quality, organic Spirulina & chlorella product:

  • Is it free from pesticides, herbicides, and artificial fertilizers?
  • Does it contain any added synthetic minerals (not a good thing)?
  • Is it produced AWAY from industry, farms, and polluted bodies of water?
  • Does it really deliver the nutrients it says it does? What's the potency?
  • Is it certified organic?
  • What quality controls measures are in place to help guarantee a quality, toxin-free product?

I admit, these are demanding requirements. But, the health of your furry (or not) companion is important.

How much to feed: for  horse’s start with small amounts half a teaspoon daily for 3-5 days then add 1 teaspoon twice daily.

For humans add same amount to juice and build up!! Tablet and capsules can be bought for those who do not like the taste.

Ps- I can take 1 full tablespoon in water without making a face.
